NorthStar Celebrates National Engineer's Week 50th Anniversary
For Immediate Release. February 22, 2001, Birmingham, Alabama: NorthStar Communications Group (NorthStar) and its parent company B E and K are putting their money where their mouth is and hosting National Engineer's Week for the first time. The event, which lasts all week, brings together a diverse group of young adults and working men and women in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of National Engineer's Week.
"We are excited and proud to participate in and show our support of this milestone event," said Bill Johnson, President of NorthStar. "Supporting young adults who show promise in the engineering field exemplifies NorthStar's determination to help in the betterment of future generations. It is events like these that make us proud to be a part of the B E and K family."
The highlight of the celebration took place on Thursday, February 22, designated as national "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day." A dozen B E and K engineers sponsored "shadow" high school students for a day-long program that included a breakfast meeting and discussion of engineering as a career; visits to project teams and CAD stations for demonstrations, and an afternoon tour of the Honda project currently under construction in Lincoln, Alabama.
In support of the event, NorthStar set up a booth at B E and K for the week, manned by NorthStar employees. Students interested in pursuing engineering as a career were given a chance to learn more about the field. NorthStar employees were on hand to answer questions and provide guidance for those students interested in the telecommunications industry. As a rapidly growing company, NorthStar recognizes that today's youth is tomorrow's workforce as evidenced in its support for education-related programs. Some examples include a partnership with Jefferson State Community College to offer an Associate Degree in Telecommunications Outside Plant Engineering, and NorthStar University, a 12-week training program in Jackson, Mississippi for new employees.
National Engineer's Week will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day at B E and K and will conclude on February 24.
NorthStar Communications Group, a B E and K company, offers a broad range of communications services, including telecom engineering, construction management, project management, network installation and maintenance and professional staffing. NorthStar, founded in 1988, was purchased in 1998 by B E and K Inc, a $1 billion leader in engineering and construction and consistently ranked in recent years as one of Fortune magazine's "Top 100 Companies to Work for."
